There is little doubt that making an emergency plumbing service call can be an unnerving experience. However, this should not stop property owners from contacting an experienced plumber as soon a serious problem is detected. Letting things go and hoping that issues will resolve themselves can end up causing more damage and costing more money in the long run. Below are a few examples of common plumbing emergencies that should be addressed as quickly as possible.
Pipes break for a number of reasons, but the most common include general wear and tear due to age or temperature fluctuations. Even a small tear in a pipe can cause a high volume of water to flow onto floors, behind walls or above ceilings very quickly. The sound of rushing water will usually accompany a ruptured pipe along with flooding. The potential for dealing with thousands dollars in damage exists if repairs are not made as soon as possible.
Leaks generally form at joints or pipe connections, but they can occur anywhere along a pipe that has cracked due to corrosion or general wear and tear. They are easily detected at faucets or beneath sinks. However, leaks can also form along pipes that are behind walls or between floors and ceilings. Leaks that form out of sight represent a significant problem because the extent of water damage can be difficult to ascertain until it's too late. Another concern is that visible signs of damage may not be a good indicator of the extent of the problem.
Obvious signs of a big leak are deformities on walls, ceilings or floors, discoloration or soft spots. Another indicator that a big problem exists is a noticeable reduction in water pressure from faucets or when the toilets are flushed. Additionally, a small leak can lead to higher water bills and structural damage as well. It is important to know that even the smallest of leaks can turn into huge problems with little or no warning.
Sewer lines can become blocked beyond drains, near connections or deep underground. Foreign objects, a buildup of gunk and grime and intrusion by tree roots are common problems. The ground that surrounds sewer lines can settle and cause the pipes to shift and crack as well. All of these examples can ultimately prevent waste water from flowing from the property into the sewer main or septic tank.
Signs of blockage include toilets that back up and water that does not drain quickly from more than one sink or bathtub. Water that pools in the grass, driveway or walkway may be indicative of damage to the underground sewer line. Foul odors can also be present even if no water is visible after a sewer line breaks.
The damage from leaks or ruptures can be temporarily mitigated by shutting off the water supply to the affected area. The best way to deal with a serious blockage is to avoid using the toilet or shower until a professional plumber can come and assess the situation as soon as problems are suspected.
