Are you getting
ready to paint
you home? Was
your home built
prior to
1978?You should
get familiar
with the new EPA
rules and
regulations that
became affective
April 22th 2010
(40 CFR 745.223)
All covered
renovations must
be performed by
Certified Firms,
using Certified
Renovators and
other trained
workers. All
homes built
prior to 1978
shall be tested
for LEAD by an
EPA certified
RRP renovator,
the law
establishes that
no work shall be
done unless a
certified
renovator has
properly tested
for Lead. About
86% of the homes
built before
1940 contained
lead, 66% of the
homes built
between 1940 and
1960 contained
lead, and about
25% of the homes
built between
1960 and 1978
contained lead,
if your home was
built prior to
1978, the paint
that was used
then, more
likely will
contain pigments
of lead.
See
more information
about the EPA
Rules and
regulations.
Why should
you be concerned
with Lead Based
Paint? Lead
based paint is
any paint or
surface coatings
that contain
lead equal to or
in excess of 1.0
milligram per
square container
or more than 0.5
percent by
weight. Lead
based paint is
very hazardous
to children, it
can cause severe
brain and
central nervous
system damage,
it can cause
decreased
intelligence,
reading and
learning
difficulties.
Damages can be
irreversible,
affecting
children
throughout their
lives. Lead
based paint is
hazardous to
pregnant woman
causing severe
damage to the
fetus. On adults
it can caused
high blood
pressure, loss
of sex drive
and/or
capability, and
physical
fatigue. Children under
six years old
are at most risk
from even small
amounts of lead,
because they are
in the process
of development,
some of the
consequences are
damage to the
nervous system
and kidney,
decrease
intelligence,
attention
deficit
disorder, and
learning
disabilities.
Lead could also
cause speech,
language, and
behavior
problems with
children under 6
years old. If you are
thinking on
renovating your
home that was
built prior to
1978, you will
need to contact
a certified EPA
RRP renovator,
not all
renovators are
RRP certified.
If a
non-certified
renovator is
working on your
home and the EPA
becomes aware,
the fines are
$37,500 per
incident, you
may not be
interested on
the fines
imposed to the
renovator, but
the health of
your children
should be a good
enough reason
not to hire a
renovator that
has not had the
proper EPA
training.

Home Renovations
Renovations can
and will improve
appearance and
comfort of your
home, but you
should proceed
only when you
are ready financially and emotionally,
renovating a home is a big commitment and
requires a lot of attention in your part. Only
knowledge will
help you make
informed
decisions that
will reduce the
risk. Not all
renovations are
created equal.
Some contractors
will perform
better than
others when it
comes to your
home
renovations.
At Traditional
Homes of Georgia LLC we recommend you start with
a good solid floor plan as this will help you
reduce misunderstandings in your renovation. Renovations
should be
planned to
upgrade your
home and improve
your lifestyle
so first step in
home renovations
is to decide
whether the
project is
simple enough to
do
it yourself, or
if you will
require a
contractor to do the work. However, if you feel
that you can do it yourself, it is still good to
get advice from some kind of trained expert
before going to work.
If
you are renovating your home to listed for sale,
we recommend you do the following:
Kitchen
Renovations
Kitchen renovations,
a good up to date kitchen with granite
counter-tops, new cabinets, new appliances and
new floors, will help you sell your homes fast
and for more money.
Kitchen
renovations
can range
from
installing
new
countertops
or new
floors to
adding new
stat of the
art
appliances,
an island or
revising the
layout.
Kitchens can
be easily
updated by
re-facing
cabinets, resurfacing existing countertops and
replacing old flooring. The
kitchen is
one the
rooms that people, family and friends tend to
gather together. The kitchen is the center of
your home. This is why when you are looking for
a new home; the condition of the kitchen is one
of the deciding factors when you make the
decision to buy a home or not buy a home.
Updating the kitchen can make the space more
functional. In general, kitchens undergo the
most wear and tear of any room in the house
(except the bathroom of course). When selling
house, kitchens sell houses. So get started and
get rid of old kitchen units and worn
appliances. Renovated kitchen may clinch the
sale. Renovations will more than pay back the
money spent on upgrading kitchens and bathrooms
in resale value. Until you actually sell, you
will have the opportunity to enjoy the rooms
too.
Bathroom
Renovations
Bathrooms
and kitchens
are the most
popular
rooms to
improve and because of
the added
value these
renovations give
to your
home.
Bathrooms
are the
smallest or
helps
improve your
home's value
the fastest.
Bathroom
renovations
can create
stylish
bathrooms
that become
not only add
to the value
of your home
but also
give you a
quiet and
relaxing
place to end
a stressful
day... in a
hot bath!
Have your
goals for
any
bathrooms
renovations
determined
well in
advance of
the project
so that your
bathroom
renovations
stay within
your budget.
When
designing
your
bathrooms,
think of the
following
things: Size
- What size
do you want
your
bathrooms to
be? A full
bath will
include a
sink,
toilet, and
a bathtub
with shower.
A
three-quarter
bath will
have a sink,
toilet, and
maybe only a
shower. A
room with
only a sink
and a toilet
is defined
as a half
bath. You
might
consider to
add a window
or a
skylight.
Remember
that a
bathroom
without
natural
ventilation
can get damp
and moldy so
ventilation
is an
important
consideration.
