Your Garage Is Part Of Your Home, Act Like It

Your Garage Is Part Of Your Home, Act Like It

The garage is the most overlooked part of the home; yet, it is one of the easiest fixes to the home that protects the home from thieves and pests, preserves heating and cooling in the home, saves money on heating and cooling costs, keeps the home clean, beautifies the home and increases a home’s property value. A neglected garage door is disastrous for the home, and it can cause death. Consider these benefits to keep your family safe, improve your home and its value.

Injury

The slightest damage to a garage door can cause it to come crashing down. This happens more than people think. It’s a common occurrence—a child or pet attempts to walk underneath, and the garage door crushes them. With timely garage door replacement or fixes, this would not occur. However, many people neglect their garage doors until it’s too late.

Here are some common problems with garage doors that can prove fatal:
• Broken rollers
• Malfunctioning hinges
• Loose springs
• Malfunctioning sensors
• Frayed cables
• Jerking movement when opening or closing
• Unevenly stretched springs
• Squeaking or grinding noises

Burglary

Beyond keeping the family safe from physical harm, garage doors that don’t close properly welcome thieves into the home. Entry through the garage puts the home’s occupants in immediate jeopardy. Thieves can hide in the garage—undetected to neighbors and the police. In addition, a garage that is partially open advertises to the neighborhood and others what the home may contain, and things may go missing from the garage.

Pests

Thieves aren’t the only ones to enter through the garage. Pests also like to enter through this entryway. It is one of the main entry points into the home. Rodents like to enter the garage because it is relatively quiet, it’s cool, and it provides a suitable nesting area. Once rodents make their home in the garage, more are sure to come. Removal of these rodents will be short-lived because they, and others, are drawn to the smell of rodent fecal matter and urine, which they mix in with their nests. Once rodents make their home in the garage, snakes are sure to follow.

Heating and Cooling

The garage can help improve heating and cooling in the home, or it can make it worse. People who need new doors or repairs incur higher heating and cooling costs because their garage door is not helping to insulate the garage. A garage can heat up the rest of the home by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit if it is not properly sealed. Likewise, it will allow cold air into the garage during the winter, and this will make it harder for the rest of the home to heat up. Getting a new garage door or fixing the broken one properly will provide savings on heating and cooling.

Less to Clean

Properly working garage doors prevent dust and other debris from entering the garage, which helps to keep the garage, and the rest of the home, cleaner. This is especially true for garages with floor coatings that prevent dusting.

Home Property Value

When the home is beautified with a new garage door, the property value increases. Adjusters take into account what other homes have sold for, but they also consider what a buyer will pay. Because buyers will pay more for a home with a beautiful garage door, it increases the home’s value.

Many people don’t realize just how important their garage door is to their home until they fix their door or replace it with a new one.

G-Brothers Garage Doors is a Colorado based garage door repair and service company; they repair, install and replace garage doors – and everything in between. With thousands of satisfied customers, they can tailor our garage door installation and repair services to fit your individual situation and needs.
